North East Guinea Pig Rescue was established in 2008 by Layla Rumsey to offer a safe haven for unwanted, neglected and abandoned guinea pigs in the local area.

Layla runs the rescue from her family home. The rescue is self-funded and relies on public donations to carry out its objectives.

The main objectives of North East Guinea Pig Rescue are:

1. To maintain a rescue centre for the care, treatment and re-homing of abandoned, stray, neglected, injured and sick guinea pigs.

2. To seek permanent homes for guinea pigs in the rescue’s care.

3. To provide a permanent home to those guinea pigs that cannot be re-homed.

4. To ensure that no guinea pig taken into the protection of the rescue is put to sleep unless recommended by a qualified veterinary surgeon for humane reasons.

5. To relieve distress and suffering to guinea pigs through educating and encouraging owners to meet guinea pigs’ basic needs and to provide the conditions which allow them to express normal behaviour.

6. To update the rescue’s practices in line with current animal welfare legislation and research relating to guinea pigs.

7. To work with other animal rescue organisations in the UK. To both assist with large scale rescues and to promote rescues for sentient animals.
